why do we want it so badly?

over coffee with yce last wednesday, i came up with the answer.

it’s because in general we spend most of our waking days fulfilling our obligations to somebody else.  we fill our days with what we ought to do as sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, colleagues, comrades, employees — and as friends.  it’s nice to know, nay, desirable, to know — that at the end of the day we’re tops on someone else’s priority list.  that someone will be there at the end of the day to say — hey, you’re alright.  you’re doing great.  and if all shit falls on you, i’m still here anyway. and if it’s not in your life, like a lot of people i know, then who are we to turn to after clocking out of the bundy?  when friends are nowhere to be found? when family has no comfort to offer?

it’s because we can’t spend the rest of our lives standing on our own.  but as i told my friend there is power in solitude.  there is power in going through your journey by yourself.  if someone else comes along to share your journey then great (admittedly a passed nugget of wisdom from another friend).  because sometimes having someone by your side as you go to wherever it is you think you’re going is a sign that you are not lost.

and who doesn’t want that?
